abstract
This study examines the impact of digital transformation on the use of Arabic loanwords in the Swahili language among young generations from a socio-semantic linguistic perspective. It analyzes the phonological, semantic, and social transformations that these loanwords have undergone within contemporary digital discourse. The study emerged from observing the increasing interaction between the Swahili language and social media platforms, which has led to the re-employment of many Arabic lexical items within modern youth culture. The research adopts both the descriptive-analytical and sociolinguistic approaches, focusing on the analysis of digital content circulated on platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, as these platforms represent linguistic spaces reflecting the actual language use of young people aged between 18 and 35 years. The study also investigates selected examples of Arabic loanwords and their transformations within Swahili youth discourse through phonological, morphological, semantic, and pragmatic analysis. The findings reveal that a significant proportion of Arabic loanwords have undergone linguistic transformations associated with youth culture and digital media. Approximately 72% of the loanwords examined in the study sample showed linguistic shifts, while only 28% retained their traditional forms. The study further demonstrates that social media platforms and Bongo Flava music have directly contributed to the spread of these linguistic transformations. Moreover, contemporary Swahili youth language has become a model of linguistic hybridity resulting from the interaction between Arabic, Swahili, and English. The study concludes that Arabic loanwords in Swahili are no longer merely historical linguistic remnants; rather, they have evolved into dynamic linguistic elements continuously renewed within contemporary digital discourse. This reflects the close relationship between language, identity, culture, and digital transformation in modern Swahili-speaking societies
