abstract

This qualitative, theoretical study aims to examine and deconstruct the interactive and complementary relationship between the concepts of sustainability and the Triple Bottom Line (TBL), exploring their role as strategic and accounting tools in evaluating and measuring the impact of organizational activities on financial, environmental, and social performance. The study employs a comprehensive systematic literature review, bibliometric analysis, and thematic synthesis of managerial and accounting literature published between 2016 and 2026. The findings reveal that the common use of the term sustainability often suffers from conceptual inconsistency in addressing all three dimensions equally; the economic and social dimensions emerge as the most consistent and immediate value drivers for realizing competitive and financial returns, whereas the environmental dimension and green accounting practices require supportive regulatory frameworks and Good Corporate Governance (GCG) to reduce capital transition costs and convert environmental compliance into sustainable market value. Furthermore, the study emphasizes that integrating environmental accounting and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) under sound governance enhances institutional legitimacy, reduces agency costs, and builds stakeholder trust. Consequently, professional bodies and organizations must develop standardized, mandatory environmental and social disclosure standards to channel sustainable finance practices toward building long-term competitive resilience.
