الملخص

abstract

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic theoretical review of the dynamic capabilities concept, which has emerged as a key framework in strategic management literature to explain how firms achieve sustainable competitive advantage in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments. The study traces the historical evolution of the concept from its roots in the Resource-Based View (RBV), analyzes its microfoundations, discusses its conceptual and methodological challenges, and ultimately proposes a future research agenda to address existing gaps. The research employs a systematic theoretical review methodology, analyzing and synthesizing leading academic literature on dynamic capabilities published in peer-reviewed journals. Foundational works (e.g., Teece et al., 1997; Eisenhardt & Martin, 2000) as well as recent empirical and theoretical studies (e.g., Laaksonen & Peltoniemi, 2018; Joussen et al., 2025) were reviewed to identify core dimensions, critiques, and research gaps. The analysis reveals that the dynamic capabilities concept has significantly evolved to address the shortcomings of the static nature of the RBV. However, the concept still faces substantial challenges, most notably definitional ambiguity, difficulties in measurement and operationalization, and the tautology problem in linking it to superior performance. The microfoundations of sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring have been identified as a central framework for the concept. This research offers a critical synthesis of the fragmented literature on dynamic capabilities, highlighting the significant gap between theoretical development and empirical application. It also proposes an integrated framework and a clear research agenda focused on the need to develop robust empirical measures, utilize longitudinal data, and understand the indirect mechanisms through which dynamic capabilities affect performance, thereby opening new avenues for researchers in the field
